A virtual birthday cake you can really blow out

Build a cake, send it in a card, and they blow out the candles with their phone's mic, wherever they are.

The eco-friendly way to celebrate

A real candle releases CO₂ as it burns. Blow out an e-Candle instead and we'll estimate how much CO₂ you avoided.

How it works

Build your cake

Mix any candles: classic, numbers, sparklers and fountains.

Send it in a card

Pick a card for the occasion. They open it and blow out your candles.

Blow it out

Blow at your phone, or tap the flames. Every cake waters a plant in your garden.

How did we get this number?

Each e-Candle stands in for real paraffin candles. We estimate a burning candle releases 0.003 g of CO₂ per second, so every blow-out counts each candle for the seconds it was lit, up to 60. A number candle counts one candle per digit, and time with the app in the background doesn't count.

This is a deliberately conservative estimate: a birthday candle holds about 1.5–2 g of paraffin, burns for roughly 10 minutes, and burning 1 g of paraffin releases about 3.1 g of CO₂ (around 0.009 g per second). It does not subtract the energy your phone uses.

Questions people ask

Can I blow out candles on my phone?

Yes. e-Candle listens through your phone's microphone, so the flames lean, flicker and go out when you really blow. You can make it easier or harder (Gentle, Normal or Strong), or tap a flame instead.

How do I send a birthday cake to someone far away?

Build a cake in the e-Candle app, put it inside a card with your message and a song, and share the link by WhatsApp, Messages or email. They open it, make a wish and blow out your candles.

Do they need the app to open my card?

No. A card opens from its link in any web browser, on a phone or a computer, and they can blow out the candles right there.

Is e-Candle free?

Yes. e-Candle is free on iPhone, iPad and Android, with ads. A one-time purchase removes the ads, and some premium card designs are extra.

Does e-Candle record my voice?

No. The sound is analysed on your device only to tell when you blow. It is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

How much CO₂ does a birthday candle give off?

A birthday candle holds about 1.5–2 g of paraffin, and burning 1 g of paraffin releases about 3.1 g of CO₂. e-Candle counts a conservative 0.003 g of CO₂ per candle for every second it is lit.

What can I celebrate with e-Candle?

Birthdays first, with number candles for any age, and also graduations, congratulations, thank-yous and love: there are 21 card designs. The app is in 12 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese and Chinese.
